Vandalism has put lives at risk following a spate of attacks on road safety signs on Anglesey.
Three electronic safety signs warning motorists to slow down as they enter towns and villages have been damaged during the past fortnight.
Cabling has been ripped out of the back of a sign in Menai Bridge, whilst signs in Valley and Rhosybol had been turned the wrong way, again damaging wiring and making them inoperable. It is not known yet whether these are separate incidents or the work of one person.
Anglesey’s Safer Roads Officer, Terfel Jones, has expressed concern about the recent attacks.
He stressed, “These are special flashing speed signs which have been installed at the request of local communities because of concerns about speeding motorists and road safety. The signs help make drivers aware of their speed and contribute towards making local communities safer.”
“The signs which were tampered with have now been assessed by a specialist contractor and repaired at considerable expense to the Isle of Anglesey County Council. However, in view of the current financial difficulties, the Authority won’t be able to repair or replace any more damaged signs which means that they will have to be removed and this could ultimately put lives at risk.”
Highways and Transportation portfolio holder, Councillor Hefin Thomas, strongly condemned the acts of vandalism.
He added, “These three communities have been robbed of a vital piece of road safety equipment for some time. This just isn’t acceptable when lives are at stake. I’d appeal to members of the public to contact the Police or Local Authority immediately should they see any sign being tampered with or to report a damaged sign.”
