Cardiff Council Park Services and Llandaff North Residents Association (LNRA) are working in partnership to create a community garden for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) spring show which takes place in Bute Park between Friday 20 and Sunday 22 April, 2012.
The title for the garden is ‘A Growing Community’ and after the RHS show it will become a permanent garden for the residents of Llandaff North to enjoy following a two phase installation to its final resting place on Station Road.
The garden is designed to be inviting, attractive, safe, practical and sustainable and will promote education, communication and community cohesion.
It is set to be made up of a colourful mix of shrubs, perennials, bulbs with a paved area, community notice board and seat.
Local residents and Hawthorn Primary School will care for the final Llandaff North garden, with help from partners Cardiff Council, Keep Wales Tidy and South Wales Police’s Llandaff North neighbourhood policing team if necessary.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “It is very positive that not only will this community garden be enjoyed by a wider audience at the RHS show, it will also be a lasting legacy for Llandaff North residents to take pleasure from it for years to come.
“I am thrilled that we could assist with this project and help the talented designers put their ideas into practice.”
Project lead, and the garden’s designer, Stephanie Wilkins said: “I really hope our RHS show garden can inspire other community groups to start their own similar ventures. The project demonstrates what can be achieved when people and organisations come together.
“On our own, none of us could accomplish this garden, but by working together, we all benefit.
“We are really grateful to Cardiff Council for giving us this opportunity to be part of the prestigious RHS show, and to our sponsors who have been so supportive.”

Brett Landscaping launched the ‘Love Your Landscape’ initiative in 2009 with a view to helping communities re-engage with their open spaces.
The scheme demonstrates how much we can all gain from well designed open spaces and working with great people all sharing a common goal – creating beautiful, valuable open spaces which everyone can enjoy.
