It’s very important to behave well on the bus on the way to and from school – this was the message from Ysgol Llandygai pupils who recently took part in a competition to design a poster to raise awareness about the importance of being on your best behaviour on school transport.
As part of the competition, Foundation Phase and Junior Pupils from Ysgol Llanydgai created posters underlining the importance of good behaviour whilst travelling to and from school. The competition was judged by Rhian Williams from Gwynedd Council’s Integrated Transport Unit.
Caroline Hughes, Ysgol Llandygai headteacher said: “Having the pupils taking part in this manner is a very good way to emphasise the importance of appropriate behaviour whilst travelling as well as helping with the development of the children as responsible citizens.”
The competition was held as part of work being carried out by Gwynedd Council and a number of key partners including schools and transport providers in order to raise awareness about new transport regulations from the Welsh Government – ‘Travel Behaviour Code Statutory Guidance’.
The code outlines how learners should act whilst travelling to their place of learning as well as noting the responsibilities of various partners in terms of responding to unacceptable behaviour.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council Senior Portfolio Leader for Environment, who leads on transport matters said:
“It is wonderful to see pupils taking a positive part in the work of ensuring that young people behave responsibly on the bus – young people have the right to feel safe when they travel to school.
“Whilst the majority of children and young people behave when travelling, it is very important that there are clear guidelines in place in order to deal with bad behaviour or behaviour which affects other people. Such behaviour can be a real threat to safety and the consequences can be tragic. That’s why it’s important that our young people understand the importance of good behaviour on the bus.”
Derfel Owens who provides transport on behalf of the Council to Ysgol Llandygai believes that the initiative is very worthwhile one.
He said: “I am very pleased that proactive steps are being taken to ensure that the journey to school is made as safe and pleasant as possible.”
