Hywel Lloyd is at the Mecca of British motorsport at Silverstone this weekend – and it’s just like a home fixture for the flying Welshman from Corwen.
Lloyd and his Sino Vision Racing team are based at the Northamptonshire circuit and do much of their preparation there.
They were also there last week for a day of official testing ahead of this weekend’s Formula Three International Series finale.
The 26-year-old who now lives in Swadlincote, in Derbyshire, is keen to make a mark in the three races on Saturday and Sunday.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to it. Silverstone is the home of British motorsport and a great place to race.
“Everyone who is anyone in racing has lined up here so it’s always special but we always give it a go wherever we are and we have real reasons for optimism.
“We had some good weekends and when the car is right we are competitive-unfortunately when that’s happened outside agencies have also intervened so I feel we’ve not had the rub of the green.”
He s referring to some unscheduled exits from the track when Lloyd was more sinned against than sinning and there is a feeling in the team that some time their luck is due to turn.
Last week’s testing was carried out in track temperatures of 34C with a bone dry surface – this weekend is expected to be more typically autumnal with wind, rain and chilly temperatures.
Lloyd doesn’t mind that: “It will make me feel right at home,” he said: “If we can get the set-up right we can be competitive there, especially is things are difficult in terms of the weather.
“That could give us a real chance but whatever the weather you just have to deal with it.
“Silverstone is a classic circuit. It’s made for Formula One so it is wider than most of the tracks we race and it gives you the chance to really race and to overtake so you can work your way through the field.”
Once again qualifying will be crucial and that takes place on Saturday morning with the first of the weekend’s three races on Saturday afternoon followed by two on Sunday with the main event, the 40-minute race, in the afternoon.
