Due to the heavy snowfall this weekend the situation is much worse for many authorities from north to south with only a few days salt supply remaining in many authorities.
Local authority gritting and ploughing teams have been working flat out to keep Wales moving, prioritising main roads which generally have remained open as a result of their efforts. Over the last few days alone several hundred tonnes of salt have been used per day by most local authorities.
To deal with the current salt pressures facing some authorities, mutual aid is already happening between the Welsh Assembly Government and those local authorities needing urgent deliveries. As far as possible the WLGA is asking all local authorities to put in place similar mutual aid arrangements to share supply and to get Wales through this winter.
The WLGA is in regular discussions with the Welsh Assembly Government and local authorities over their salt supply and we are also waiting the import of 12k tonnes of extra salt at the end of this month.
With more snow forecast for the next few days we ask people to exercise extreme care and diligence and only make journeys where absolutely necessary. While main roads generally remain open, most side roads and streets remain untreated. If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours please check on them.
Due to the weather conditions there may be some disruption to your council services this week such as your waste collections. Please check your council website for further information.
