More than 30 firms attended an information workshop held at Blaenau Ffestiniog to encourage Gwynedd companies to bid for contracts as part of the major improvement work in the town.
Work to transform Blaenau Ffestiniog town centre is due to start in the autumn. The £4.5 million improvement project aims to create a vibrant shopping location, as well as forging a distinctive visitor destination. Residents’ opinions have given clear steer to the town centre work with people stating that plans should be based on the area’s traditions and heritage.
The information day held at the Bro Ffestiniog Rugby Club gave local firms an opportunity to learn more about the regeneration project and the work which will need to be undertaken. The information day, organised by the Welsh Government’s Supplier Development Service and Gwynedd Council, was well attended and positive feedback on the scheme was given on the day.
Councillor Dewi Lewis, Gwynedd Council’s Economy and Community Portfolio Leader said:
“Supporting local businesses is a key priority for Gwynedd Council. One way in which we can do this is by encouraging and supporting local firms to compete for contracts for work in projects like this exciting regeneration scheme at Blaenau Ffestiniog.
“There is much anticipation locally for this important project which aims to make the most of what Blaenau has to offer, and we hope that Gwynedd companies will make the most of the opportunities that are on offer.”
The Blaenau Ffestiniog regeneration project is funded through the EU and work is carried out by Gwynedd Council working in partnership with the Welsh Government and local voluntary group Blaenau Ymlaen.
The improvements which are set to get underway in Blaenau Ffestiniog later this year include:
- major environmental improvements to the town centre with the aim of encouraging more tourists to explore and find out about Blaenau Ffestiniog’s fascinating history and culture;
- funding will be available for the town’s shops to improve the external appearance of the town’s buildings, including new signs and windows;
- developing a unique gateway at the entrance to the town from the A470 by renowned local artist Howard Bowcott, along with other visual features in locations throughout the town by local artists;
- improving signage around the town, including with interpretation boards outlining Blaenau Ffestiniog’s history;
- developing a performance location in the town to celebrate and promote Blaenau’s language, culture and heritage.
The £4.5 million regeneration project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and Gwynedd Council.
