A local specialist jeweller has come to the aid of Swansea’s Lord Mayor after a link broke on the official Lord Mayor’s chains.
Oxford Street jeweller Spencer Morgan received a plea for help from the civic leader’s team one weekend last month after the hook that attached the historic pendant badge to the chain snapped.
As it broke on a Saturday the Lord Mayor’s Office feared that a number of engagements on the following Monday would have to be cancelled or the unthinkable may happen with attendances being made without the chain.
Luckily Spencer Morgan and his team stepped in and put aside other work to get the chain fixed in time.
Swansea Council Lord Mayor Cllr Alan Lloyd said: “We are very grateful for the emergency work and kindness shown by Spencer Morgan and the jeweller’s team.
“Whenever I do an official function or an official visit people expect me to be wearing the chain. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do that. But thanks to their expertise I was able to go ahead after all.”
The chains and badge were gifted to Swansea by Frank Ash Yeo at the end of his mayoral year in 1875 and were first worn by Mayor James Livingstone in 1875 to 1876. They have been worn by each successive Mayor and eventually Lord Mayors since.
