London footie fans urged to realise resolutions in Swansea

Fans of Arsenal and Chelsea are being given the chance to realise some of the most common New Year’s resolutions by visiting Swansea this month for Barclays Premier League fixtures at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea Council’s tourism team has drawn up an info-graphic for supporters of the two London-based teams to try to encourage them to spend time in Swansea Bay.

The Swans play Arsenal on Sunday January 15 and Chelsea on Tuesday January 31.

Typical New Year’s resolutions include learning a new language, doing more exercise and trying something different. This is why the info-graphic is suggesting football fans learn some Welsh for a Swansea visit, take the opportunity to exercise on scenic Gower and have a go at surfing in the waters off Swansea Bay.

The info-graphic has now been tweeted to famous Arsenal and Chelsea fans and supporter groups and sent onto newspapers and radio stations local to the clubs in the build-up to their clashes with the Swans.

It’s one of many marketing campaigns spearheaded by Swansea Council that’s helping raise the profile of Swansea Bay as a visitor destination among Premier League fans.

Anyone who clicks on the infographic will be redirected to the official www.visitswanseabay.com destination website where a dedicated fans corner section is available that offers a guide to Swansea Bay.

The Council has also arranged for 1,000 eye-catching posters of Swansea Bay to be put on London Underground tubes from the start of the New Year.

The posters show an image of a surfer off the Gower coast and encourage London Underground users to ride a different kind of tube for a change.

Promotional shots of Three Cliffs Bay have also been strategically placed at London Paddington’s Underground Station

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “We’re now just over halfway through the Premier League season and many thousands of travelling fans have been to Swansea Bay and have experienced the best the area has to offer. And what’s really encouraging is that many of them said they’d come back in future even when the football’s not on. This shows the Premier League is having a positive impact on Swansea Bay as a destination.

“The next two games at the Liberty Stadium are against two of the world’s most famous clubs and our marketing activities both online and in London are further raising the profile of Swansea Bay.

“Our destination has so much to offer fans of clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea because of the availability of stunning coastal scenery and outdoor activities like surfing that land-locked Londoners have to travel hundreds of miles to access.

“The sheer volume of Arsenal and Chelsea fans across the world also means the eyes of millions will again turn to Swansea when the games are on.”
