London Welsh are wearing a special retro jersey in this season’s British & Irish Cup as part of the club’s 125-year Anniversary celebrations.
The Dragons unveiled the new commemorative 1970s style jersey for last Saturday’s B&I Cup game against Moseley at Old Deer Park.
The Exiles lost 24-21 and will be hoping the new jersey brings them better luck on Saturday when they welcome Swansea to Esher RFC after Old Deer Park was deemed unplayable due to a heavy frost for a game being shown live on S4C.
Swansea are fitting visitors to Old Deer Park this season as the Exiles’ first game against the Whites was at St Helen’s on December 24, 1885 – the year London Welsh was formed.
“The 125-year Anniversary was a lovely opportunity to go retro,” said London Welsh Managing Director John Taylor. “The idea was to recreate a jersey that was reminiscent of the 1960s and 1970s.
“Originally the plan was for a retro shirt just for supporters to wear, but then we thought it would be nice, and a bit of fun, to extend it to the players.”
There is a limited edition of 500 jerseys available in the club shop at London Welsh, with each jersey individually numbered. The players’ jerseys will be auctioned off at the end of the Exiles’ British & Irish Cup campaign.
The jersey is part of the club’s 125-year Anniversary celebrations, which will culminate next year in a Ball.
