The Lord Mayor of Cardiff has concluded his year by presenting his nominated charity, LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity with a cheque for £64,000.
The presentation took place at LATCH’s Sky Ward in the Children’s Hospital for Wales in Cardiff with Judge Phillip Price, Chairman of LATCH, receiving the cheque.
Choosing LATCH as his nominated charity for the year was a relatively easy choice for the Lord Mayor, “I chose LATCH this year because when my granddaughter Poppy was 19 months old she was diagnosed with liver cancer and given only a 40% chance of survival. Having seen what LATCH do for the parents and the children here at the Children’s Hospital It was quite clear in my own mind that I should support them. So when I became Lord Mayor it was the ideal opportunity to give them something back.” he said.
In addition to the many activities undertaken throughout the year, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were keen to just spend time at the hospital. He said, “Some of the most important things we’ve done this year is to be with families who have children who are in a regime of treatment, who are very ill. It was also important to share time with some of the parents who have lost their children and the people who’ve just received the news that their child is very ill and to be able to do something to help. To talk to the parents, to be able to share sympathy and support, I hope we have given hope to all the children and families that LATCH support in such difficult circumstances.”
Executive Chairman of LATCH, Judge Philip Price said, “We’re enormously grateful to The Lord Mayor and The Lady Mayoress, first of all for choosing LATCH as his charity and for the money that’s been raised through them. They’ve been indefatigable in attending occasions and events, in taking new initiatives and in raising the profile of LATCH. Quite apart from the financial benefit to the children and the families, we’ve been hugely heartened by their personal involvement. They know what it’s like to have a child who is desperately ill and their concern and warmth has been a huge help to the children and the families on the ward.”
