Love healthy eating message to pupils

Captain Jack the Swansea pirate encouraged pupils at Penllergaer Primary School to love healthy lunches on Valentine’s Day.

The mascot for the city’s school meals service in primary schools will be handing out Valentine’s Day bounty to his crew of pupils enjoying a school dinner.

A pirate-themed campaign to boost the number of primary-aged children enjoying a healthy school meal at lunch time has been paying off and Captain Jack has proved a hit with youngsters.

Bet Jenkins is Head of the School Meals Service at Swansea Council. She said: “Many of our schools make a special occasion out of Valentine’s Day and Santes Dwynwen’s Day and we know how important it is to love eating healthily so Captain Jack will be spreading the message to Penllergaer pupils.

“Since we launched the Join the Crew campaign, Captain Jack has continued to visit schools and school dining rooms because we want youngsters to realise that eating healthily is not just tasty but that sitting down to a varied, balanced lunch each day is a fun experience too.

“It is not just about refuelling in a healthy way but is also about socialising with friends, learning table manners and taking time out from a busy day.”

Throughout the spring term the Swansea School Meals Team are running the four-week scheme in schools across the City and County and youngsters having a school lunch could be in line for lots of pirate booty.

Bet said: “Children who are having school meals will have a great chance to win a prize every Wednesday while the competition is running in their school canteen.

“Having a school dinner in primary school means you get a menu with two courses, a drink and fruit and bread for just £1.90.”
