Make a Splash without Spending the Cash

Cardiff Council’s free school holidays swimming scheme for children is now in its seventh year and is still going strong.

This year, a host of fun activities have been added to the programme so why not jump in at the deep end and try something new?

There are seven participating leisure centres around the city and each has their own individual schedule of events running throughout the summer break. So why not ‘Walk the Plank’ at Eastern Leisure Centre, try out water polo at Fairwater Leisure Centre or get ‘Wet and Wild’ at Maindy Centre?

Other activities include pirate pool inflatables, fun with snorkels, masks and flippers, pool parties and raft races.

For those who can swim 25m there are also rookie lifesaving courses which introduce children to lifesaving skills, strengthen their swimming ability and teach basic resuscitation.

The free swimming initiative funded by the Welsh Assembly Government was launched in 2003 and is aimed at promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. It allows all children and young people aged 16 years and under living in Cardiff to go swimming absolutely free of charge in any of the seven swimming pools.

The free sessions run seven days a week between 10am and 4pm during every half term holiday and the summer break.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “I am thrilled that this scheme continues to be so popular with young people around the city and with the introduction of different pool activities it adds a variety of enjoyment. We have some fantastic pools in Cardiff and it is great that children can use these facilities to stay active and healthy without spending any money.”

The pools across the city are Maindy Pool, Llanishen Leisure Centre, Eastern Leisure Centre, Pentwyn Leisure Centre, Fairwater Leisure Centre, Western Leisure Centre and Splott Pool.
