The man who was badly burned following a fire on Chepstow Road in Newport has died this morning, Saturday 12th March.
Officers have confirmed his identity, he is in his thirties and from the Newport area. Enquiries are currently being made to trace his next of kin.
A post mortem is due to take place today to establish how he died.
A 27 year old man, who was originally arrested on suspicion of assault, has now been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody being questioned.
Officers were called to the Gateway Express Hotel at approximately 10.10pm on Wednesday 9th March, following a fire which occurred in the forecourt of the hotel.
The man who has now died, had been lying in the forecourt area, and may have been sleeping or unconscious.
Enquiries are still on going to establish the cause of the fire and whether it was deliberately set. However medical examinations confirm the deceased had suffered some other injuries and officers believe he was the victim of an assault. The location and timing of any assault is yet to be confirmed and officers are continuing to carry out enquiries in the Chepstow Road area.
