Man Jailed for Causing Death by Careless Driving in Port Talbot

white rtcA man has been sent to prison after admitting causing the death of a pedestrian by careless driving in Margam, Port Talbot last year.

Fifty-two-year-old Judith Elizabeth Thomas, known as Judy, died in the collision which involved a black Mitsubishi pick-up vehicle which was being driven along Margam Road near the junction with Cefn Ffynnon.

Driver Phillip Alfred James White, aged 49, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison.

White was also banned from driving for a year. The judge ordered the forfeiture of the vehicle under Section 143 of the Criminal Courts Act 2000.

The fatal collision happened at 6.19pm on Wednesday 30th January on the A48 Margam Road.

Inspector Carwyn Evans, of the South Wales Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “White showed a total disregard for the law by driving otherwise than in accordance with the conditions of a licence.

“I would like to thank those members of the public who assisted with first aid that evening and who came forward as witnesses.”
