Soldiers taking part in the Royal British Legion’s March for Honour will arrive in Newport at the end of this week.
Four teams from each of the UK’s services – the Royal Navy, Army, RAF and Marines – are setting off from four different locations on 4 November.
Wearing military uniform and carrying 40lbs of equipment, they will speed march a mile for every military life lost in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001.
All four teams will reunite in Wootton Bassett before continuing to London where they will deliver the Book of Remembrance to the Royal Albert Hall for the Royal British Legion’s National Festival of Remembrance on November 11.
Serving and former Army personnel are due to arrive in Newport on 4 November from Cardiff and will then leave on the next stage to Bristol the following day.
The city’s mayor, Councillor Bill Langsford, and mayoress, Mrs Sue Langsford, will greet the soldiers at the main reception of the Civic Centre at 8.30am on Friday, 5 November.
“I have a deep respect for all those who are serving and have served in our armed forces and this is an admirable way to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” said Councillor Langsford.
“The aim of the organisers and those taking part is to raise £1 million for the Royal British Legion who work so hard to support the welfare, interests and memories of service personnel and their families.
“They deserve our support and I hope they surpass their target for the Royal British Legion’s vital work.”
