Mayor of Wrexham officially opens Gwyn Evans Centre

Gwyn Evans Leisure & Activity Centre was officially opened by the Worshipful the Mayor of Wrexham on Friday 10th December following an impressive £750,000 refurbishment.

The established Gwersyllt centre with a 25 metre, 4 lane swimming pool has been closed since December 2009 to accommodate major improvements including the building of a brand new first floor to house the new state on the art Technogym suite, a much improved spectator area to seat 100 as well as an upgraded reception area, kitchen, teaching room and extended car park.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Wrexham, local councillors, members of staff, teachers and pupils from Ysgol Bryn Alyn and members of the general public all gathered to declare the Gwersyllt site officially open.

The opening has been eagerly anticipated by the local area as Gwyn Evans provides a number of services and activities to the local community and schools including swimming lessons, sports hall and court rental, fitness classes and now Gwersyllt’s first Techogym complete with digital audio visual equipment. Combined together with the extended swimming spectator area and car park Gwyn Evans is now the leisure and sporting hub of the local area.

Pupils from Ysgol Bryn Alyn with support from Wrexham County Borough Council’s 5×60 Officer Darren Jones were on hand to put the equipment to good use with basketball, netball and gym sessions.

Cllr Bob Dutton OBE Deputy Leader for the Council and Lead Member for Communities and Performance said

“The young people at Ysgol Bryn Alyn are regular users of the facilities at Gwyn Evans. It is great to see such dedication to an active lifestyle from these pupils and I hope the new fitness equipment at the centre will continue to feed their enthusiasm.”

Gwyn Evans is now taking bookings for swimming lessons, sports hall activities, children’s parties and tennis court reservations.
