Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Mayor, Councillor Simon Lloyd, has added the Pontypridd War Memorial Appeal to his official charities for his Mayoral year.
Cllr Lloyd, who jointly launched the Appeal back in October with Pontypridd Town Mayor, Cllr Gwen Williams, has made the decision in recognition of the importance of the Pontypridd War Memorial project.
It is customary each year for the Mayor of the County Borough to formally designate one or more charities, for which they will raise money during their year of office. Cllr Lloyd has already selected Marie Curie, the Cynon Valley Cancer Support Group and the Christian Lewis Trust, which all support people affected by cancer, and The Royal Corps of Signals who look after veterans in hard times.
There is currently no memorial in Pontypridd listing the names of all those from the town who lost their lives in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts. Rhondda Cynon Taf and Pontypridd Town Councils are working with the Royal British Legion to establish a monument in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park displaying Pontypridd’s Roll of Honour.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor, Cllr Simon Lloyd, said:“From the First World War onwards, over 1200 people from Pontypridd have given their lives serving their country so that we all may live in freedom and the project to erect a memorial listing their names is a very worthy one and deserving of support.
“That is why I have decided to add the Pontypridd War Memorial Appeal to my charities and hope that we can raise as much money for it as possible.”
