Monmouthshire County Council has published its Improvement Plan for 2011-14. Called ‘Looking to the Future’, the plan describes the issues that the council will be prioritising over the next three years.
The council writes that it is doing well is most areas but acknowledges that there is still considerable room for improvement. The public sector is facing a big challenge to make sure services remain viable in the current financial climate.
Monmouthshire County Council is facing up to this challenge by modernising services and focusing on the difference it can make to people’s lives. This ambition was most recently on display during back 2 business week which focused on the desire to improve the prosperity of the council by making it more attractive to business and promoting the county to inward investors.
As well as supporting enterprise and job creation the council is prioritising education and services for the vulnerable. The plan describes the projects the council will deliver over the coming years including: joining up health and social care services; working with neighbouring councils on shared education support services; setting up a new community interest company to promote investment in green and digital technology.
Paul Matthews, Chief Executive, said:
“We consider our core challenge in this time to be one of retaining the trust and respect of the citizens of Monmouthshire whilst we act with reducing resources and increasing demand for services.
“The forthcoming year is a big one for the council. How we perform will determine our relevance, viability and vitality as a provider of public service for the next three to five years. We intend and expect to do well.”
