Monmouthshire County Council has announced that intensive works to replace the railway carriages at The Old Station, Tintern has been completed and the carriages will officially open on Friday 16th July.
The opening will also be an opportunity to celebrate the Old Station’s recent success in gaining, at first attempt, Visit Wales’ visitor attraction quality accreditation.
The carriage works was part of the Overlooking the Wye scheme which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and managed through the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) partnership with Monmouthshire County Council.
The carriages house the new look shop and the new Destination Wye Valley exhibition with information about the heritage of the Wye Valley that will interest all the family.
There are interactive displays; opportunities to investigate interesting artefacts from days gone by; a river trading board game; a colouring table and a playground outside. There is also a Victorian tearoom that was described as ‘idyllic’ in the latest issue of County Living magazine.
John Sterry site manager of Old Station, Tintern said:
“It’s great to have the new carriages complete and ready for use. We’ve already had lots of amazing comments about them.”
The carriages are being officially re-opened by Councillor Peter Clarke, MCC’s Chairman.
There is a full programme of events and activities at the Old Station all summer. It’s an ideal place for family visits during the holidays.
