Monmouthshire County Council is trialling the use of plastic kerbstones for its highways network. The kerbstones are made of recycled plastic. They are frost resistant and far lighter than their concrete counterparts – so they are easier to work with and transport. The trial is taking place in Holywell Close, Abergavenny.
Cllr Bryan Jones, Cabinet Member for County operations, said:
“Innovation isn’t just about redesigning services; it’s also about doing the same things better. Although these new kerb stones are more expensive than the traditional concrete ones, they are more resistant to frost and far easier to work with – which means that they’re cheaper to install. I’ll watch the trial with interest.”
He added:
“I’m particularly pleased that these new kerbstones are better for the environment. And given the recent huge increase in our recycling rates, it’s fitting that we’re looking at ways to use recycled plastic to the benefit of the communities we serve.”
