AM, Russell George, has met representatives from a Montgomeryshire community council in Cardiff who are seeking road safety improvements to the A483 Maerdy Road junction.
Members of Llandrinio & Arddleen Community Council have collected 740 signatures for a petition urging the Welsh Government to improve the safety of the Maerdy Bridge Road junction on the A483, by adding a central reservation and by the installation of street lighting.
The Montgomeryshire Assembly Member, who is a member of the National Assembly’s Petitions Committee, met the Chair of the Community Council, Cllr Brian Foulkes, as well as Cllr Stella Townsend and the Clerk of the Council, Carol Davies, in the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, as they officially submitted their petition for formal examination.
Commenting, Mr. George said:
“I commend the efforts made by Llandrinio & Arddleen Community Council in collecting a significant amount of signatures relating to this important local issue.
“The purpose of the petitions process is to enable the people of Wales, wherever they live, to raise issues and directly influence the work of the National Assembly.
“In this case, the Community Council is asking the National Assembly to consider this issue that is within its power to investigate and do something about it.
“I know this junction well and I believe there are real safety concerns here.
“The Committee has agreed to write to the Minister for Economy, Science and Transport seeking her views on this petition and I look forward to receiving that response.”
On submitting the petition, Cllr Brian Foulkes said:
“The purpose of this petition is not only to raise awareness of this problem but also to demonstrate to Assembly Members the strength of local feeling that exists to find a positive solution.
“As a local recovery operator, I have witnessed first hand, the accumulation of accidents that have occurred at this spot over the last ten years and something needs to be done.”
