A Welsh Conservative AM today expressed astonishment that the National Assembly for Wales barely makes the top 50 results when typing ‘Wales’ into Google.
The nation’s democratic legislature can eventually be found on the fifth page as the 48th result, behind bodies including Squash Wales, the governing body of squash and the Welsh Darts Organisation.
Clwyd West AM Darren Millar said, “I am shocked that Wales’ leading democratic institution barely appears in the top 50 hits in Google.
“It is embarrassing that members of the public or tourists should have to trawl through pages of results to find out how to visit the Assembly or contact elected representatives.
“In a multi-media age of websites and social networking, being able to access information and services online is increasingly important to democratic participation.
“I am amazed given the substantial sums of money spent on the Assembly website, that measures have clearly not been taken to guarantee its profile on the web. I will be calling on the Assembly Commission to take steps to redress this embarrassment as a matter of urgency.”
