Welsh Conservatives have raised concerns about the decision by some local authorities in Wales to charge people for the payment of council tax and of parking fines by credit card.
Figures obtained by Shadow Minister for Local Government Darren Millar AM, show that Conwy Council charges payees 1.24% of the amount paid for council tax payments made by credit card, while Caerphilly Council charges 2% on both council tax and parking fines paid by credit card.
Commenting on the figures, Mr Millar said:
“Council tax has more than doubled in Wales under Labour and charges continue to rise at an alarming rate.
“It is disappointing that Conwy and Caerphilly Councils are penalising customers paying by credit cards for certain services and many will accuse them of making a quick buck at the expense of local people.
“In a time when householders across Wales are struggling with rising council tax bills, these charges just put further burdens on hardworking families and individuals.
“I would urge these councils to reconsider their position over credit card charges in line with other authorities and stop unfairly penalising people living in their areas.”
