Welsh Conservatives have ruled out a revaluation of council tax bands in Wales during the next Assembly term.
Speaking at a Conservative Policy Forum in Llandudno, North Wales, Shadow Minister for Local Government Darren Millar AM has announced that a Conservative Assembly Government in Wales would not review council tax bands before 2015.
A disastrous revaluation of council tax bands in Wales took place under Labour in 2005.
Mr Millar said: “Welsh Conservatives pledge that we will not put Welsh homeowners through the upheaval of another revaluation of council tax bands.
“No such promise had been made by the other political parties and the threat of further re-banding still hangs over the heads of everyone in Wales. That is simply not acceptable.
“The 2005 scheme left thousands of households out of pocket; many by hundreds of pounds a year.
“Not only has council tax more than doubled since 1997 but for every one home that moved down a council tax band in the revaluation, four moved up.”
“The less well-off were hit the hardest, with two-thirds of the hikes in homes in the lowest three bands.”
“In September, Labour plans for council tax revaluation in England were postponed for the lifetime of the current Parliament.
“Welsh Conservatives would rule it out for the whole of the next Assembly term.”
