Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar has today condemned a Welsh Government announcement on education funding for Denbighshire.
The Minister for Education and Skills today provided an update on the Welsh Government 21st Century Schools programme and capital expenditure for the next 4 years. The update shows that Denbighshire has been awarded less than £3.5 million of the £415 million distributed to Welsh councils – less than any other local authority. In sharp contrast, Blaenau Gwent received most with just under £50 million, whilst Cardiff and Bridgend were awarded £48.9 million and £35.3 million respectively.
Commenting on the figures, Darren Millar said:
‘The distribution of this cash is an absolute disgrace and reaffirms the message that North Wales is at the bottom of the list when it comes to the Welsh Labour Government’s priorities.
‘Many of Denbighshire’s schools are in need of significant investment to bring them up to modern standards and the Welsh Government must provide adequate support to ensure that they get there.
‘The Minister must explain why Denbighshire has been given less money than any other local authority in Wales and why North Wales has been awarded less than any other Welsh region – it simply isn’t good enough.’
