Millar: Flu jab uptake ‘worryingly low’

Wales’ flu jab uptake is ‘worryingly low’ and lags behind both England and Scotland – according to latest figures. Just 51.8 per cent of over 65s in Wales have been vaccinated against a Welsh Government target of 75 per cent.

In Scotland, latest stats show 61.6 per cent of over 65s have received the jab. In England, the figure is 60.8 per cent.

34.9 per cent of those under 65 and in an at-risk group have been vaccinated in Wales against a government target of 75 per cent.

In Scotland, latest stats show 39 per cent of at-risk under 65s have received the jab. In England, the figure is 37.5 per cent.

The 50 per cent Welsh Government target for health worker vaccinations has also not been met. 27.8 per cent of NHS staff have currently received the jab.

Shadow Minister for Health Darren Millar AM said:

“These figures are worryingly low and suggest the potential for more winter pressure on our NHS.

“It’s absolutely crucial that the minister improves education on the flu jab and does everything possible to boost these figures.

“Labour’s record-breaking cuts mean our NHS is already facing untold pressures and it’s imperative that we get as many at-risk groups immunised as possible.

“Failure to do this will result in even more strain on a health service already pushed to breaking point.”
