Darren Millar AM has been awarded the ‘KC Dog Parliamentary Award’ in recognition of his work to promote canine access and responsible dog ownership in his constituency over the past year.
Mr Millar was presented with the accolade on account of the positive action he has taken to help Clwyd West’s dogs lead happy, healthy lives, which includes encouraging Conwy County Borough Council to reconsider their dog control order proposals, which would have restricted access areas for dogs and their owners. He also requested that the council’s consultation period be extended to ensure that as many local people had the opportunity to respond.
Mr Millar has been particularly proactive and consistent in raising important canine welfare issues in the Welsh Assembly, including dog breeding, puppy farming and the issue of how local authorities deal with stray dogs. Mr Millar said: “I am pleased to be at the Kennel Club accepting this award and am only too glad to do my part towards local dog owners and walkers”.
Speaking at the presentation, Kennel Club Chairman, Steve Dean, said: “These awards are an opportunity for us to credit the actions taken by politicians to ensure that the UK’s dogs continue to enjoy maximum access to the our open spaces.
“Darren Millar has gone above and beyond to ensure that both dogs and their owners get the best deal possible in terms of access and protection of their rights. We thank him for his tremendous contribution to making a positive difference to our four-legged friends and hope that his approach will act as a model for others to follow.”
