Welsh Conservatives will tomorrow highlight the burden placed on Welsh households and businesses respectively by above inflation increases in the Council Tax and Business Rates.
Speaking ahead of the party’s Opposition debate in the National Assembly, Shadow Minister for Local Government Darren Millar AM said:
“Many households in Wales are already struggling to get by in this challenging financial climate.
“The Assembly Government’s failure to award an adequate local government financial settlement has forced councils across Wales to pass on the extra cost to households to ensure the continued provision of vital frontline services.”
Welsh Conservatives will also use the debate to raise concerns over the impact of the Business rates revaluation on many businesses in Wales.
Shadow Minister for the Economy David Melding AM added:
“Firms large and small will receive inflation busting demands for higher rates next month at exactly the time they need government support.
“Businesses in Wales are reeling from the worst recession since the 1940s yet the Assembly Government is failing to provide any meaningful support to aid the country’s economic recovery.”
