Millar: Older people suffer from rural bus cuts

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has confronted the Welsh Transport Minister over the impact of cuts to rural bus services on older people.

Bus routes in many rural areas are being axed as a result of a surprise announcement of transport grant cuts by the Welsh Government. Conwy and Denbighshire Councils have only been given two months notice of cuts of 27% in Welsh Government funding in their grants compared to the 18 months notice that Councils in England received.

Addressing the concerns Darren said:

“Many older people have access to concessionary bus passes which give them freedom and independence. But, a bus pass is useless if there are no bus routes that the user can access – this is often the case for elderly service users in rural areas.

“The Transport Minister must work closely with local councils to protect important rural routes in order that older people don’t lose out on services.”
