Clwyd West AM Darren Millar is back in Wales after an emergency operation in South Africa.
The Shadow Health Minister was on a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association visit to Cape Town when he suffered a complicated break to his ankle during a boat trip to Robben Island, the notorious island prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for almost two decades.
Darren is now recovering at home after having an operation to fit a metal plate to repair his ankle. He said:
‘I want to take this opportunity to thank all those well-wishers who have been in touch with kind messages of support for me and my family.
‘I could not have received better care and attention than I did in South Africa but there is nothing like home to make you feel better. It is great to be back in Wales and on the road to recovery.
‘It will obviously be some time before I make a full recovery but in the meantime my offices will continue to function as usual.’
During his hospitalisation in South Africa, Darren received a visit from Desmond Tutu.
Darren said:
‘It was such a privilege to meet one of the most influential spiritual leaders in the world.
‘Desmond Tutu played a pivotal role in the struggle against apartheid and helped to lay the foundations for the new South Africa we see today.
‘He is a living legend and an inspiration to all.’
