Millar: Postponed council tax revaluation reminds Wales that bills are bigger under Labour

Commenting on news that Labour plans for council tax revaluation in England have been postponed for the lifetime of the current Parliament, Shadow Local Government Minister and Clwyd West AM Darren Millar said:

“This news reminds us that here in Wales the previous Labour government rolled out a revaluation scheme in 2005 that left thousands of households out of pocket – many by hundreds of pounds per year.

“Not only has council tax more than doubled since 1997, but for every one home that moved down a council tax band in the revaluation, four moved up.

“The worst off were hit hardest, with those in bands A to C being more likely to be re-banded upwards than others.

“This news will be a huge relief for anyone living in England. They will not have to prepare for the same big council tax increases which were forced upon homeowners here in Wales.

“Let’s hope that a similar commitment can be made for homeowners here.”
