Commenting on the Local Government Measure, Shadow Local Government Minister Darren Millar AM said:
“Welsh Conservatives broadly welcome this legislation, which we feel will give us the opportunity to enhance local democracy, and promote real devolution by giving local councils more responsibility.
“The ‘big government’ approach that we’ve grown accustomed to over the last decade or so needs to change, and steps to promote the process of decision making by good representatives of local communities is indeed a positive step forward.
“While we welcome the broad thrust of the legislation, it is regrettable that the Minister hasn’t taken this legislative opportunity to make it easier for communities to directly elect mayors.
“It is now incumbent on the Minister to provide the leadership needed to see this legislation through to ensure that participation in local government is broadened and increased and promotes real devolution for people in Wales.”
Speaking in the Assembly Chamber, Shadow Minister for Finance Nick Ramsay AM said:
“We are concerned at the proposal to give allowances to Town and Community councillors.
“It is a fundamental change to the existing arrangement and we do not see that there will be public appetite for this unnecessary and unaffordable move, at a time where public spending decisions are being made.”
