Commenting on today’s publication of new government statistics, which show a nine per cent rise in the total number of patients experiencing a delayed transfer of care, Shadow Minister for Health Darren Millar AM, said:
“Like overlong waiting times, bed blocking is an on-going problem under Labour that shows no sign of going away.
“These increases, both in overall numbers of cases and the total number of people waiting to leave hospital, are completely unacceptable and should be urgently addressed.
“Not only is this an extremely costly problem for a Welsh NHS that is facing the biggest cuts in its history, it also has a very negative impact on the independence of vulnerable older patients in particular.
“Delivery and performance across the health service will inevitably suffer as a result, subsequently impacting upon the health and wellbeing of many more patients.”
