Commenting on figures published by Cancer Research UK on rising rates of lung cancer amongst women in Wales, Darren Millar AM, Shadow Minister for Health, said:
“Rising incidence of lung cancer amongst women demonstrates all too clearly the human cost of tobacco addiction.
“Smoking remains the single most preventable cause of premature death in Wales, which places an increasingly heavy burden on the NHS.
“Seeing a loved one battle against lung cancer is desperately distressing for families and friends and could so easily be prevented.
“We need a major new campaign to warn, particularly to young people, of the dangers of tobacco addiction and the options to quit, which are readily available through the NHS and community pharmacies.”
