Darren Millar, Assembly Member for Clwyd West, is leading the campaign to save Kinmel Bay Library which is threatened with closure.
Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet met yesterday to discuss its library strategy and agreed to consult on the closure of a number of libraries across the area, including Kinmel Bay.
When asked to comment, Darren said: ‘Figures show that book loans from Kinmel Bay Library have been bucking the national trend and are actually increasing. I’m astonished that the local authority are intending to close it.
‘This library serves both Kinmel Bay and Towyn, a community of nearly 8,500 people in total. I’m not aware of any other community of such a size that does not have a dedicated public library.
‘Kinmel Bay Library is a modern facility with excellent disabled access and plenty of parking. It is also used by local schoolchildren and is convenient to get to by public transport – it’s unthinkable it should close.
‘Closure could also threaten the viability of the Community Centre which shares a building with the library. If both facilities were lost it would be a double whammy for the local residents.
‘I’ll be doing everything I can to fight Conwy County Borough Council’s proposals and ensure that Kinmel Bay Library stays open.’
