Commenting on WAG’s decision to begin talks on including Wrexham within a second express service from Cardiff to Holyhead, Shadow Minister for Transport Darren Millar AM said:
“I am astonished that Labour-Plaid was ready to invest £3.5 million into this service without it stopping at the largest town in North Wales in the first place.
“This is another example of the kind of wasteful short-sightedness we’ve come to expect from this Welsh government. Only after the criticism do they see their blunders.
“The Deputy First Minister should also be speaking to Arriva about Colwyn Bay. This is the largest population centre on the north Wales coast and it is still being completely ignored – it’s absurd.
“This whole announcement is extremely expensive and has clearly been rushed. The so called “express” service will save just 17 minutes on the time of the speediest normal train service from Holyhead to Cardiff.
“What we should be doing is investing in the duelling of tracks in those parts of Wales where it would make a much more significant reduction in travel times.
“We need to spend money wisely and give many more people an incentive to use public transport.”
