Welsh Conservatives have called on the Assembly Government to scrap first class travel for government ministers and civil servants.
Speaking in the Assembly Chamber today, Shadow Local Government Minister Darren Millar AM challenged the First Minister to follow the Westminster Government’s announcement that UK Government Ministers will lose their ministerial cars and, along with civil servants, will be banned from using first class travel.
Commenting on the exchange, Mr Millar said:
“I welcome these sensible measures by the UK Government that will see a significant sum on money saved across all Government departments.
“It is a shame that the First Minister did not confirm that the Assembly Government would follow this example and impose similar rules on Ministers and their staff.
“It beggars belief that taxpayers should be paying for Ministers and civil servants to be living the high life and travelling first class when households across Wales are being expected to tighten their belts even further.
“Maintaining such perks is unacceptable practice in a time of such economic unrest is simply unacceptable.”
