Millar: Wales must be prepared for adverse winter weather

Shadow Local Government Minister, Darren Millar AM, has called on the Welsh Assembly Government to provide a statement on its preparations for adverse winter weather.

The request follows the severe conditions Wales fell victim to at the start of this year. Persistent heavy snow and icy conditions resulted in demanding consequences for road users, health facilities, those in need of care and school staff, pupils and their families.

The Clwyd West AM said: “We need to be sure that the Labour-Plaid Government and local councils are taking appropriate action to prevent unnecessary disruption in the event of severe weather this winter.

“Plans must be in place to deal with intense pressure on our road salt supplies, school closures and access to health facilities.

“Help for vulnerable people to ensure a supply of heating oil for homes in difficult to reach areas must also be in place.

“We also need an update on road maintenance issues following the cuts in cash available for road repairs last year. Welsh roads are still full of pot holes and this will only get worse if the country fails to prepare properly for the winter ahead.”
