Shadow Local Government Minister Darren Millar has urged the Assembly to slash business rates to encourage enterprise and inspire an entrepreneurial spirit in Wales.
Under proposals from the Welsh Conservatives, businesses with a rateable value of up to £10,000 would pay no business rates. The Labour-Plaid Assembly Government’s new business rates relief scheme, which begins this week, falls well short of that.
The Clwyd West AM said: “Small businesses are the backbone of the Welsh economy and deserve to be recognised as such by the Labour-Plaid coalition in Cardiff Bay.”
“Cutting business rates will help them ride out the current economic downturn and encourage small business start-ups by giving people the confidence to invest.
“Labour-Plaid’s scheme is far too little, far too late. It will also be of no comfort to the employees of businesses forced to shut their doors during the recent recession.”
