Millar: Welsh Government must act on flood insurance

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has called for the Welsh Government to make sure home owners in flood risk areas have access to affordable home insurance.

The Association of British Insurers have warned that agreements to provide affordable insurance to homes in high risk areas will come to an end in 2013 and that some households may find their homes uninsurable unless a new agreement can be reached.

Around 20,000 homes in North Wales currently benefit from access to insurance as a result of the existing agreement, which requires continued government investment in flood risk reduction plans and defences in return for 100% access to affordable insurance premiums.

Over 6,000 homes could be affected in Darren Millar’s Clwyd West constituency, which was the scene of devastating floods in Towyn and Kinmel Bay 22 years ago.

Darren Millar said:

“A staggering 20,000 homes in North Wales could have insurance withdrawn or face unaffordable premiums unless a new agreement is reached, including more than 6,000 homes in my own constituency.

“Having lived in Towyn during the devastating floods 22 years ago, I know just how damaging a flooding events can be and the emotional and physical toll they can take on local residents and businesses.

“The Welsh Government must engage with the Association of British Insurers as a matter of priority to ensure that households and businesses in North Wales are able to access insurance cover for their properties.”
