The Welsh Culture Minister has given his clearest indication yet that the Government want to see a viable, long-term solution for the Owain Glyndwr centre found and that it will work with the local community to achieve that aim.
Responding to a question from Montgomeryshire Assembly Member, Russell George, Minister for Culture and Sport, John Griffiths AM, stated that the parliament building in Machynlleth is an important building for Wales and that he and his officials will work with local groups to “find a solution that we would all like to see.”
Commenting, Mr George said:
“I am pleased to hear the Minister’s positive response because the Owain Glyndwr building is under extreme financial pressure to survive.
“The local community is rallying and doing what it can; in fact it held a successful Christmas fundraiser last week to help generate some additional revenue to keep it going.
“However, such a historic building as Wales’s first parliament cannot and should not be allowed to operate in such an unsustainable way.
“I am meeting the Minister and his officials this week (10th December) to discuss this further because a viable alternative needs to be found soon to secure this important piece of heritage for the future.”
