Minister challenged over A55 road works

A Welsh Assembly Government Minister has been challenged in the National Assembly over the on-going road works on the A55 in North Wales.

Darren Millar, Assembly Member for Clwyd West and Shadow Minister for Transport, challenged the Minister for Business to make a statement on the road works and ensure better coordination with local authorities. Road resurfacing work being carried out at Junction 23 Llanddulas and Junction 24 Abergele has reduced the dual carriageway to one lane in sections, causing long delays to traffic in and around the local area.

Speaking after he raised the issue in the Senedd, Darren Millar said:

‘The significant road works taking place on the A55 are causing terrible congestion for motorists in the town of Abergele. They are also causing disruption and delays for local residents and businesses.

‘I challenged the Minister to make a statement to ensure coordination with local authorities, such as Conwy County Borough Council. I also pushed the Minister to ensure that inconvenience to local residents and businesses is considered during the course of planned maintenance.

‘The problems could be relieved through better planning, working during less busy periods of the day and temporarily switching off traffic lights at the Market Street/Chapel Street junction in Abergele whilst the road works are taking place.

‘The current situation cannot continue.’
