Pupils from Cwmcarn Primary School gave a warm welcome to Lesley Griffiths AM, Minister of Science, Innovation and Skills recently, as she joined them to celebrate the school’s success in winning a prestigious science award.
Pupils fought off stiff competition from more than 1,500 entrants to become the only school in Wales to win a prestigious Rolls Royce Science Awards. The school had the opportunity to show off its fantastic trophy, when Lesley Griffiths AM paid a visit to the school. She was bowled over by the award and the excitement and enthusiasm of the pupils.
Cllr. Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education and Leisure said, “This is a fantastic achievement for Cwmcarn Primary School and indeed Wales. We have so many talented pupils here in the Caerphilly county borough, and I am so proud of the pupils and staff involved at Cwmcarn Primary for going the extra mile to showcase that talent. A big ‘well done’ must go to everyone involved in achieving this prestigious award, and for managing to create a healthy and challenging science learning environment for the whole school to thrive in.”
As part of their science lessons, pupils from Years 5 and 6 have had the opportunity to discover the true magic of the world of science, thanks to their dedication and the help of their teacher Mr Scourfield. The pupils have had the opportunity to launch rockets, explore gravity and create exciting lesson plans for their peers.
Winning the Rolls Royce Eden Award was a fantastic climax for the pupils, many of who are in their last year at the school before heading off to Secondary School next September.
The underlying principles of the Eden Project are that science should be ‘beautiful, educational, inspiring – painting the bigger picture and helping to make the difference to the younger generations futures’.
