Welsh Government Health Minister Mark Drakeford was keen to explore ways of measuring performance outcomes in surgery at this year’s Cardiff GI Masterclass.
The Health Minister heard at first hand the opinions and experiences of Gastro-Intestinal surgeons regarding the best ways to publish surgical results at the annual event for specialists in Gastro-Intestinal Medicine which is now in its 16th year.
The conference brought topical issues to the attention of those training and working in Wales and welcomed speakers from a national and international background to discuss innovations in the field of upper and lower Gastro-Intestinal surgery. This year, the focus was on the how surgeons can present their performance data to the public to improve transparency across the NHS in Wales.
The event was organised by the Welsh Institute for Minimal Access Therapy (WIMAT) which is a world class surgical simulation training centre, based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
Speaking to surgeons at the event, Welsh Government Health Minister Mark Drakeford said:
“This marks an important step in delivering the Welsh Government’s agenda on improving transparency in the NHS. The views of clinicians are key, not simply providing additional data, but explaining that information in a way which makes it understandable to patients .”
