Health Minister Edwina Hart has officially opened a new mental health unit at Glanrhyd hospital, Bridgend.
Angelton clinic is one element of the plan to modernise mental health services in Bridgend, providing 42 beds for older people with dementia on the Glanrhyd Hospital site.
The unit has been designed to provide greater privacy and dignity for patients and their families.
Accommodation is made up of private bedrooms with en-suite facilities, shared spaces (living room, TV lounge, dining room) and therapeutic areas.
The clinic will replace out-dated inpatient accommodation at Glanrhyd and Maesgwyn Hospitals. Patients will transfer to the modern, purpose-built inpatient facilities.
Mrs Hart said:
“The challenge dementia poses in Wales is significant but a considerable amount of work is underway to improve dementia services. This centre is an example of the commitment shown by the NHS in Wales to deliver real change to those diagnosed with dementia and their carers.”
