Welsh Seafoods Ltd – a new fish processing and selling business based on the Docks in Milford Haven – focuses on supplying Welsh fish to the local restaurant and pub trade and building a brand for fish caught in Welsh waters and landed on Welsh shores. Over 50 boats are landing direct to Welsh Seafoods, which prides itself on sourcing quality fish, sustainably caught and fully traceable.
The business is a partnership between Sean Ryan, a trawlerman, and Chris Davies, who managed the business under its previous trading name of Walter Davies & Son. Sean owns the two largest Welsh trawlers to be operating from a Welsh port and fishes for scallops and a range of finfish.
Sean successfully applied for £84,312 under the European Fisheries Fund in 2009 to expand the processing facility in Milford Haven and add value to his product.
Opening the new business in Milford Haven, Rural Affairs Minister, Elin Jones said:
“I’m very pleased to be here today to open Welsh Seafoods.
“Sean and Chris have done a lot of work in transforming and expanding this business and it looks to have excellent prospects.
“The extra processing capacity helps our fishermen and increases the value added to fish before it leaves Wales, providing benefits for the local economy.
“This supports the aims of the Wales Fisheries Strategy and the European Fisheries Fund, and I’m pleased to say that Sean has successfully applied for a grant of £84,000 to part-fund this project.
“They are both strong advocate of local sourcing and this new business will make Welsh fish much more available to local consumers.
“I very much hope to see the high quality fish that comes through these premises on retail counters and restaurant menus throughout Pembrokeshire and beyond.”
