Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage Huw Lewis has welcomed the news that Marks & Spencer is to stay in Rhyl for another year.
The store in Rhyl was due to close in January 2012, but following the negotiation of a new lease, it will now stay open until Spring 2013 when business will transfer to a larger store, which is due to open at the Stadium Development in nearby Prestatyn.
Huw Lewis said:
“I’m sure the people of Rhyl and the surrounding area will be pleased to hear that Marks & Spencer will be staying open in Rhyl until the Spring of 2013. The store has been a key player on the resort’s High Street since for many years and local people have been very vocal in their opposition to the closure, which shows just how much they value the store’s presence in the town.
“This will also be a boost to efforts to regenerate the town, which the Welsh Government is closely involved in. We will continue to work with Denbighshire County Council and other partners and stakeholders to address town centre management issues with the aim of attracting new private investment into the town centre to replace Marks & Spencer in 2013.”
Rhyl is part of the designated North Wales Coast Regeneration Area and has received £26m in funding over the past three years to support a variety of projects in support of the North Wales Coast 2016 Action Plan.
