Ministerial transparency questioned in local government

Welsh Conservatives have questioned the transparency of the Local Government Minister, following a series of bland and uninformed replies to Written Assembly Questions.

During August, 30 questions from Conservative Shadow Ministers were initially greeted with the response: “I will write to you and a copy of the letter will be placed on the internet”.

In one instance, nine requests for information sent by the same Assembly Member remain outstanding.

Ministers are required to reply to written questions from AMs within seven days.

Shadow Minister for Local Government, Janet Finch-Saunders AM, who has not received a single response in the last three weeks, said:

“While short delays must be expected at times, this level of ignorance is bewildering.

“The nine questions I have asked include requests for information on local government funding and the government’s proposals for public service reform.

“These are important issues and I do not expect a government Minister to sweep them under the carpet for weeks on end.

“There is a level of openness and transparency required from Labour’s Cabinet – and in this instance it is seriously lacking.”
