The RNLI volunteer crew at Moelfre will tomorrow demonstrate the rescue technique, which saved 40 of the Royal Charter’s passengers, after the ship was wrecked by a severe storm off Moelfre on 26 October 1859, with the loss of 479 lives. Crowds are expected on the headland at 2.30pm, to watch the lifeboat launch and the volunteer RNLI crew demonstrate a ‘breaches buoy.’
Tomorrow morning will also see RNLI Operations Director Michael Vlasto unveil bronze panels outside Moelfre Seawatch Centre. The artwork with scenes from the Royal Charter shipwreck was created by sculptor Sam Holland to commemorate the anniversary of one of Wales’ greatest maritime tragedies.
A host of events will take place in the village to mark the anniversary from theatre performances to guided walks, concerts and talks with local historians.
