People in Monmouth have submitted dozens of ideas on how the space between the old and new Monnow bridges could be improved.
In January, Monmouthshire County Council asked people in the town to show officers their design concepts and creative suggestions for the location.
This is part of ‘Gateway Monmouth’ which is a scheme that plans to improve the bottom end of Monmouth, often the first part of the town that visitors see.
Bethan Gibbens, Assistant Regeneration Officer at Monmouthshire County Council, said:
“Gateway Monmouth aims to improve the appearance of the southern gateway of Monmouth. We all want the area to be welcoming and sympathetic to the history of the town.
“We invited the thoughts of those who live or work in the town and the responses show that people in Monmouth have bundles of creativity and a lot of pride in the town.
“We had 113 responses in total, including submissions from school students and retired professionals and we were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and ideas for the site.
“It’s important now that we get further views and we want the rest of Monmouth to tell us which elements of the ideas they’d like on the site by visiting the display and completing a questionnaire.”
Some ideas submitted by people in the town include:
- Extended parking
- A playground
- A fountain
- A square for markets and events
- Upgraded toilet facilities
The ideas will be displayed in Monmouth One Stop Shop and in Monmouth Library from today (Monday 19th) until Friday 7th May.
